What is session zero?

Session zero is the conversation before the adventure. Here is what happens and why it matters.

By Unavoidable Dragons ·

Session zero is the first meeting of a new table, before any dice are rolled in anger. Your Dungeon Master explains the world, you build characters together, and everyone agrees what the game should feel like.

What happens

  • The DM pitches the setting and tone
  • You build characters, with help if you are new
  • The table agrees lines and veils: topics to avoid or keep off-screen

Why it matters

It means nobody turns up to the wrong game. For beginners, it is the easiest way to learn the rules without pressure.
